Eligibility

If you are accepted and enroll in the Pre-College Summer Program, it comes with the valuable support of the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) ensuring that your tuition will be covered for the enrolled sessions. Therefore, all applicants must be current clients of DVRS.

Other eligibility requirements

In addition to being a current client of DVRS, All applicants must meet the follow requirements:

  • Be within their IDEA transition years at the start of the program (ages 16-21).
  • Have an intellectual disability and/or adaptive behavior limitations that would impact the ability to participate in a general post-secondary education/transition curriculum (AAMR definition of intellectual disability).
  • Display sufficient emotional and independent stability to participate in coursework and campus/community environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to accept and follow established student conduct rules.
  • Present skills in communication, including basic skills in functional literacy and numeracy.
  • Have the ability to conduct daily hygiene routines independently.
  • Have the stamina and ability to navigate a college campus.
  • Reside within the State of New Jersey.
  • Have an Interest in attending a post-secondary transition program which includes Career and Job Exploration/Preparation.

  • Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • Educational Evaluation
  • Student Photo

Please note the following:

  1. This program will be held on the campus of The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Ewing, NJ and is only offered as a residential program.
  2. Repeat attendance of the Pre-College Summer Program is not allowed.
  3. The Pre-College Summer Program is not open to students enrolled in or applying to an inclusive post-secondary education program.

The admission process will reflect the same rigor and selectivity as the TCNJ full-time ID/DD College program.

Applications will be reviewed, and eligible students will be invited to interview in February 2025. Please note: applicant and parent/guardian(s) must attend the interview for consideration.

Students will be notified about acceptance via email no later than March 15.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does a youth require the agreement of their local school district?

No, however, coordination and collaboration with the youth’s school district is extremely desirable and will increase the likelihood that the initiated transition processes will continue.

Does a youth need to be a resident of New Jersey?

Yes, all applicants must be current residents of New Jersey.
